MOERMI: Licensing

A guide to the Morgan Open Education Resource Mentoring Initiative project for Geospatial Technologies, funded by the Maryland Open Source Textbook Initiative.

About Licensing

Primary decision-maker:  Faculty participants

The resources created in this program are protected by United States copyright, and will require* licenses to make them available for use and distribution to others.  Licensing can be a very time-consuming and costly process, so several “open licenses” schemes have been developed to mitigate the complications of corporate licensing.  An open license allows users to:

  • Retain - make, own, and control a copy of the resource, e.g. downloading as many copies as you want, copying a digital file as many times as you want, etc.
  • Revise - edit, adapt, and modify your copy of the resource, e.g. translate the work, revise certain aspects of the work, etc.
  • Remix - combine your original or revised copy of the resource with other existing material to create something new, e.g. select one chapter and add it to your own book,
  • Reuse - use your original, revised, or remixed copy of the resource publicly,
  • Redistribute - share copies of your original, revised, or remixed copy of the resource with others, e.g., post a copy online or give copies to students.

These licenses are designed to provide easy-to-understand guidelines for how others might use works created in this program.

Creative Commons (CC) is a widely recognized licensing platform to facilitate easy distribution and use of copyrighted materials.  The CC license platform outlines the rights reserved by content creators and the obligations of others who use the resource.  In compliance with the conditions of the project grant to make the resources as extensible and accessible as possible, all resources created in this program are licensed according to the most recent version (4.0) of Creative Commons.

The CC scheme has several types of licenses each of which has a deed and supplemental legal code and a unique symbol. More information from: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/

*The granting agency requires products generated in this project to be licensed with the CC International scheme.

Licensing Options

Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0)

This license lets others distribute, remix, adapt, and build upon works created by others, even commercially, as long as they credit the author for the original creation. This is the most accommodating of licenses offered, and is recommended for maximum dissemination and use of licensed materials.

This license will allow users to:

  • Share — copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format
  • Adapt — remix, transform, and build upon the material for any purpose, even commercially.

Under the terms, users:

  • Must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made; and may do so in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests the licensor endorses you or your use.
  • May not apply legal terms or technological measures that legally restrict others from doing anything the license permits.

For more information and license deed please see: creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/

For CC-BY 4.0 legal code, please see: creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/legalcode

Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0)

This license lets others remix, adapt, and build upon original works even for commercial purposes, as long as they credit the author and license their new creations under the identical terms. This license is often compared to “copyleft” free and open source software licenses. All new works based on the original will carry the same license, so any derivatives will also allow commercial use. This is the license used by Wikipedia, and is recommended for materials that would benefit from incorporating content from Wikipedia and similarly licensed projects.

  • Distribute remixed, transformed, adapted or other derivative works under this license.

For CC-BY 4.0 legal code, please see creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode

Attribution-No Derivatives 4.0 International (CC BY-ND)

This license lets others reuse the work for any purpose, including commercially; however, it cannot be shared with others in adapted form, and credit must be attributed to the original author.

This license will allow users to:

  • Copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format for any purpose, even commercially.

Under the terms, users:

  • Must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made; and may do so in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests the licensor endorses you or your use.
  • May remix, transform, or adapt the material, but may not distribute the modified material.

Attribution-Non-Commercial 4.0 International (CC BY-NC)

This license lets others remix, adapt, and build upon original works non-commercially, and although their new works must also acknowledge the original author and be non-commercial, they don’t have to license their derivative works on the same terms.

This license will allow users to:

  • Share — copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format
  • Adapt — remix, transform, and build upon the material

Under the terms, users:

  • Must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made; and may do so in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests the licensor endorses you or your use.
  • May not use the material for commercial purposes.
