The links to the left provide information about historical decennial census data available trough the National Historical GIS in tabular format and other sources including questions asked in each census, original census reports spatial analytic units available and microdata when available .  

Note that microdata is available 72 years after the census is complete.  The next data embargo will be lifted in 2032 for the 1960 census.

For each census year listed to the left you can access information about:

  • What questions were asked for the census
  • A description of the variables available through NHGIS
  • A description of the spatial files available for each census year
  • Sources for tabular data, microdata when available and official reports and publications
