Data Management and Project Planning

A guide to data management and planning resources and practices

About Project Planning and Data Management

Data Management is a set of decisions, techniques and other approaches to collecting, storing and protecting data to ensure that it is accessible, reliable and adequately documented.

Data Management is a fundamental concept in research and is applied in all steps of the research process.  Issues like file format, data types, documentation, versioning, security governance, and storage or disposal are paramount considerations in the planning process and ultimately throughout

As with all things related to data, there are overlapping and contradicting definitions about what data management is and what it encompasses.  The approach taken here defines data management as a process of data planning, data and file organization, documentation, sharing and storage that is parallel and complementary to other practices in research like data collection, exploration, processing, analysis and so on.

This guide provides resources and advice on data management and can be used in connection with the library's other guides on data science and resources.  In this guide you can find information about:

  • Data Management Plans
  • Guidance on data management practices
  • Book and article resources on Data Management
