Understanding Your Author Rights: Publisher Policies

A guide on your rights as a published author.

Major Publisher Agreements

Different publishers have different restrictions on posting articles online, and it's important to understand your rights before signing an agreement. For example:

Elsevier

  • author can archive pre-print
  • author can archive post-print
  • cannot use publisher PDF
  • must link to journal site or DOI
  • published source must be acknowledged

Taylor & Francis

  • author can archive post-print
  • cannot use publisher PDF
  • must be a non-profit server
  • must link to publisher version
  • 12 month embargo for STM journals
  • 18 month embargo for SSH journals

SHERPA/RoMEO provides information about publisher policies, as well as a list of publishers that allow authors to use the publisher PDF.

Paid Options for Open Access

Some traditional publishers offer an open access option to authors in exchange for a fee. Examples of journals and fees are provided below and SHERPA/RoMEO provides an extensive list of publishers offering a paid open access option.
