Meeting/Seminar Rooms in the Library
Soper Library makes available to faculty and staff the use of the Parren J. Mitchell
Seminar Room and the Benjamin A. Quarles Afro-American Studies Room. Requests from student
organizations will be considered on a case-by-case basis. The rooms are not intended for
use as classrooms or sites for reqularly scheduled meetings.
Named in honor of the former Congressman and retired MSU sociology professor, the Parren J.
Mitchell Seminar Room is suitable for conferences, workshops, and programs. It seats 50; a
chalkboard and lectern are provided.
The Benjamin A. Quarles Afro-American Studies Room is named for the acclaimed author and
former MSU history professor. It seats 12 and may be used for meetings, interviews, and
small group presentations.
Requests for use of either the Mitchell Room or Quarles Room are coordinated by University
Events Office, in the McKeldin Center. Contact Deborah Grady in McKeldin, Room 206

Policy Governing Use of the Meeting/Seminar Rooms
- Library instructional sessions and other Library sponsored activities have priority.
- The use of the rooms must not interfere with the operation of the Library. Generally,
telephones are reserved for Library business, and staff members are not available to
receive or deliver messages.
- Charts, paintings, and other objects may not be hung on the walls or suspended from the ceiling.
Except for the necessary rearranging of the furniture, the rooms and their contents should not be altered in any way.
- It is the responsibility of the individual(s) requesting use of the rooms to secure any
equipment that might be needed, supply all materials, rearrange furniture, clean up and return
the rooms to their original appearance and condition.
- The Library is not responsible for duplicating materials for meetings.
- Food and beverages are not permitted in the rooms.
- The Library is not responsible for items left in the rooms.
- Dates and times of activities must conform to Library hours.
- Allow enough time for the Library to be notified at least one week in advance of
the planned use of the rooms.
