History and Purpose

This department is named for Miss Beulah Myrtle Davis who was librarian from 1926 to 1965. Graduated as class Valedictorian from Morgan College in 1925, she served her alma mater the following year as College Librarian and Dean of Women. Eight years later, she relinquished her responsibilities as Dean to devote full-time to her duties as librarian. Through her leadership and dedicated efforts, she made an outstanding contribution to the growth of Soper Library. During her administration, the library collection grew from 7,000 books, mostly donations from libraries of deceased Methodist ministers, to approximately 100,000 volumes in 1965. Miss Davis' legacy is the collection of African American materials that chronicles the achievements and contributions of African Americans throughout the diaspora.
