    General Information

Soper Library's Government Documents Room is located on the Ground Floor, Room G-26. It houses United States government publications, and to a lesser extent, the publications of the Maryland state and Baltimore City municipal governments.

Soper Library was designated as a United States Depository Library in 1940. As such, it receives all publications within the categories pre-selected by the U.S. Documents Librarian.

The Government Documents Room is administered by the Reference Department. U.S. government documents circulate following the same general principles that guide the rest of the library's collections, i.e.: periodical, rare, reference, and serial publications do not circulate. Everything else does. U.S. government documents have comparable loan periods to the library's non-depository items. Maryland and Baltimore publications do not circulate.

    Collections

      United States Depository Collection

Almost all federal agencies are represented in the publicatons that constitute this collection. Come here for census reports, transcripts of congressional hearings, special reports of Presidential commissions, statistical data, indexes to government publications, etc. Soper Library has been a selective federal depository since 1940.Beginning in the 1970s, U.S. government documents have been increasingly available though the OCLC system, as well as the Library's catalog. Approximately 85% of currently received publications are cataloged and available through catalogusmai. . The catalogusmai. supports hypertext linking, thus making access to online U.S. government information effortless.

Computer workstations for accessing online information and CD-ROM/DVD-ROM products are located in the room. Unlike materials elsewhere in the Library, U.S. publications are shelved in accordance with the Superintendent of Documents (SuDoc) classification system. If you need assistance, a staff member will help you locate documents of interest.

      Maryland and Baltimore Collections

The Maryland and Baltimore collections consist of documents from the State of Maryland and City of Baltimore, as well as related, non-government publications. While they are located in the same room as the much larger collection of U.S. government publications, they are not subject to the same policies and guidelines that govern the later. The Maryland documents are being cataloged so that they will be accessible via catalogusmai.
