Loan Period: All circulating books may be charged out for 28 days or extended loan period for staff and faculty.
Number of Books Borrowed: There is no limit to the number of books charged out at one time.
Renewal: Books may be renewed, if no one has requested them. Books to be renewed may be
brought to the Circulation Desk or requested from the online catalog (click on 'my account'). Books may not be renewed by telephone.
Registration: All borrowers must register as a Library user in order to charge out
materials. All students, faculty, and staff must present a University ID card when
registering and when borrowing materials.
Responsibility for Books: Borrowers are responsible for all materials charged to their ID card. Borrowers
are urged not to permit others to charge out materials on their cards, nor to allow
others to return books that have been charged out to them.
Returning Books: Books should be returned to the Circulation Desk or placed in the outside book drop.
All books placed in the outside book drop after closing time will be considered returned
the following day.
Fines, Fees, and Notices
Fines:
A fine of 25 cents per item, per day, is imposed for books returned late, beginning on the 4th day after
due day. The maximum late return fine per item is $10.
Lost Book Charges:
For books that have been lost or deemed lost (not returned within 45 days of the due date), the borrower will be charged a
default, average replacement price of $60, plus a $20 processing fee. Should the book then be returned, the replacement
charge and processing fee will be removed, but the $10 maximum late return fine must be paid.
Patron Notices:
Items are overdue once the due date has passed. An Overdue Notice is sent to the borrower 14 days after the due date. A Bill for
Replacement is sent when an item is 45 days overdue.
Personal Records Online:
Using the online catalog ('my account'), patrons may check on the status of their circulation activities,
access related messages, and note any problems with their account. You'll be prompted to enter your 14-digit
bar code number and last name. Patron with old ID numbers may have trouble accessing this function.
In such cases, request the information you're seeking from the Circulation Desk
attendant.
- Borrowing from Other Libraries
Soper Library patrons may borrow materials from any other USMAI (University System
of Maryland & Affiliated Institutions) library, upon presentation of a current
MSU ID. These institutions are identified in the online catalog.
Borrowing from USMAI libraries may also be done online. After identifying a
title of interest and libray location in the online catalog, click on "request
(request an item for pickup)" You'll be asked to enter your last name and the
14-digit barcode on your ID card. The books will be delivered to Soper Library
and you will be notified of their arrival.
Additionally, patrons may borrow materials, in person, at any of BALC (Baltimore Area
Library Consortium) libraries listed below. A current MSU ID must be presented.
BALC libraries include those at:
- Baltimore Hebrew University
- Goucher College
- Md. Institute College of Art
- Villa Julie College
Circulation FAQ
Faculty members may place Library materials on reserve for use by their students.
Reserve materials are shelved at the Circulation Desk and are available for use within
the Library for short periods of time.
If a reserve item is not returned on time, fines accrue at higher rate than those for
non-reserve items, with a maximum of $25.00 per item. Lost items, mutilated materials,
adjustments, appeals, etc. are subject to the same policies that govern materials that
circulate from the general collections.
Materials on reserve are noted in Soper's online catalog--searchable by the
instructor's name, course number, course name, department name, or words in the title.
Faculty wishing to place materials on reserve should make their requests on a Faculty
Reserve Request form, available at the Circulation Desk or online.
Soper Library attempts to obtain from other libraries any type of materials requested
by faculty, staff, and students. Soper will not request materials via ILL that are
available at USMAI libraries; such materials may be borrowed
directly from libraries through use of the online catalog (see 'Borrowing from Other Libraries).
All loans are made library-to-library; request for 'hand-carried' loans (to speed up the process)
are discouraged and generally permitted only in extreme emergencies.
Soper Library will lend to libraries within Maryland and to academic and special
libraries within the United States. Not all materials owned by Soper are available
for interlibrary loan.
MSU patrons should make their requests on the Interlibrary Loan Request form,
available at the Circulation Desk or online.
